Black Jack Habitat

You can drop into the canyon with just a short hike from the highway.  My friend Carl and I went there for a Saturday morning exploratory expedition (10/25/08).

What's interesting about this zone is that one could find 4 or maybe 5 different rattlesnake species in the same area because it is the edge between mountain species and desert species. One could certainly find Northern Black Tailed, Arizona Blacks and Western Diamondbacks...very probably a Mohave, and possibly a protected Banded Rock Rattlesnake.

What we found on this day were a couple of tree lizards and several Canyon Tree Frogs.

Another fascinating aspect of Black Jack Canyon is this ancient aboriginal camping site:

One can still see that the ceiling is black from the soot of prehistoric campfires and there were some traces of red hieroglyphic art up high on the wall...Just imagine the memories this stone must hold.

Unfortunately, the cows who sleep in this overhang have turned it into a filthy dust bowl, and the illegal pot hunters have removed practically every last pottery chip from the earth floor.
