Checkered Garter Snake

 Ain't it a beauty!!!

It did a lot of posturing, but never tried to bite me.

This appears to be a male, was apparently injured by traffic (a large lump in it's body, anal plate scar...), and was found by a neighbor in Duncan, Az. back in the fall of 2006. Thanks neighbor!
